Introducing "SEL Matters"
2019 was a year of massive transitions for me. I became a high school teacher for the first time in nearly two decades, I'm teaching one English class, and a period of restorative circles with an emphasis on social and emotional needs. Though the transitions have been chaotic and extremely stressful at times, there's been an amazing sense of satisfaction as I've been responsible for coordinating a program that most matches how I'd choose education to look for everyone.
I've settled in to the new role, and I'm finding more time to write and reflect, which is so important for my own happiness, but I also want to be a role model for my students as I implore to them that they must "find their voice" and "share their stories." This blog is going to do just that, and I'm really excited about that. I'll link to other things I'm writing and what I'm reading as well. I'll be sharing about my students and their stories, and I'm going to definitely include videos too.
The #REACH program is new, complicated, and a work in progress, but I'd like to begin by sharing what students have said about it. I'm looking forward to hearing from readers who have their own stories and ideas to share.
